What are the different ways to enter safe mode in Win 95? We've tried F5/F8 with no success. Thanks,

I think the SHIFT key also performed this function in Win95.

I use Windows 95 everyday and this is the correct answer. Restart your computer, when it gets past the Power On Self Test (POST) start hitting the F8 key. I believe Microsoft technet recommends hitting the F8 key after you see the "Starting Windows 95" words at the bottom of the screen but to get there I always start hitting the F8 key repeatedly after POST.

Here are several ways of bringing up the bootmenu so you can select safe mode if pressing F8 does not work.

1) Booting to a floopy that brings up a 'non system disk error' and then pressing F8 twice.

2) While in windows click on start, point to programs, and select MS-DOS prompt.

At c:\windows type cd.. and return. This brings you to a c prompt.

Type edit msdos.sys.

Under [options] you want to add this new line: bootmenu=1

Hold alt and press 'F', then release alt and press 'X'.

Hit enter to save the changes.

Restart the system and you should receive the bootmenu.

3) Hit the F8 key every other second as soon as the system starts to boot up.
