Environment Variables

By ray_hall ·
In the good old days of DOS it was simply got to your CONFIG.SYS and adjust number of files and increase the buffer size. How do I do it in Win95/98. I tried to search in help but could not find anything.

I posted a question on 02/07/02 I gotno response. (Q. No more than 10 data files in the same folder can be opened at one time. MYOB Plus Accounting Software) I think the answer lies in the area I am thinking on but I don't know where to find this in Win95/98.

Kindly assit

This can still be set in config sys. The default variables are too low for a networked system...

Go to Start> Run> and type SYSEDIT. Click OK.
Close the autoexec.bat file which will comprise the top window.
Look for a line that starts "FILES=" followed by a number such as 50.
Set this to read "FILES=200" (without the quotes). Note-there are NO spaces in this line.
If the line is not listed add it to the bottom of the CONFIG.SYS file.
Look for a line that reads "BUFFERS=XX"; if this line does not exist consider adding it to improve performance. I would use a value of 80 here.
Depending on your application, you may want to increase the STACKS as well.
Close the window. You will be prompted to Save.
Choose Save.
Reboot your computer

The default value for files is 60, for buffers is 30, and for stacks is 9,256.

I think the reason you didn't get an answer before was that just adding files/buffers in the system configuration may well *not* be the problem here. Still...you asked how to do it and I hope it helps.

Is your MYOB Plus Accounting Software a DOS program?

Windows programs do not use the files= line in the config.sys file unless it is a windows 3.x program. Win95 and Win98 programs should not need to have a Files= line in config.sys.

If you remember how to edit config.sys in DOS.

Go out to the DOS prompt, change directories to the C directory. Then type

edit config.sys

I don't think you problem is with the OS System, but it lies with MYOB. Check with their support for the error.
