Erasing data tapes

by just jo . Updated 18 years ago

I’ve been asked to find out what is the best method of erasing data tapes. Our SysAdmin has a box of old backup tapes.

With hard drives, you can smash them or drill holes in them. Is it safe enough to run the tapes past a heavy duty magnet to erase all the data? Or should I give them to my teenager to smash with a hammer!?!?

We can’t use these tapes any more because we changed drive size. It’s not good enough just to throw them away because someone will have an old tape drive that could possibly read the information.

Thanks for your help.
