Errant mouse pointer

by blackcurrant . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

I have an intermittent problem with my Chic Technologies serial mouse. Several months ago the pointer was snapping to the top right hand corner of the screen. The mouse worked fine on another machine, and mice I substituted (which work fine on othermachines), on my machine displayed the same problem. I checked Device Manager and identified an extra mouse entry that was not functioning properly. I deleted the extra entry, rebooted and the problem was solved.

The problem has reappeared twice since. I have checked Device Manager for ‘errant’ entries in both normal and safe mode but there is just the single mouse entry which is, according to the Properties window, functioning properly and has no conflicts. I removed the mouse from COM1 andinserted it in COM2, rebooted, and the problem persisted. I loaded the COM2 driver and rebooted and the problem persisted, so I swapped it back to COM1 and installed the COM1 driver. The problem will inexplicably disappear for no obvious reason. I have not installed/uninstalled any new software. The snapping only seems to occur 1. on the desktop, 2. when opening a file from within an application, or 3. when performing a command. Other times the mouse functions fine. The problem has not occurred for several weeks now. This machine has been checked for viruses. I was wondering if it was a glitch in the OS.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Mark
