Error 1706

I get this error when I need to update an application i.e., Microsoft Office on my Windows 2000 Professional OS. It tells me “no valid source code could be found for the product MS Office 2000 Professional. The Windows installer cannot continue”. I also get a VDD registery error when I try to access 16-bit applications. I think they are related. I need to know how to fix this error. I have uninstalled all programmes that might have attributed to this error. I also have the latest service packs installed. Let me know if more info is neeeded for this question.
