error 554 - relay access denied

By dmelb ·
An external sender has tried to send an email to one of our staff and is receiving the following bounceback message:
host (our domain name) says:
554 <Relay access denied>

What does this mean? Does this indicate a problem on the sender's side?

Most likely the person sending mail has incorrectly configured their settings for SMTP authentication.

("Allow Authentication" in Eudora, "My server requires authentication" in OE) should resolve the issue.

SMTP Error - 554

Transaction failed

This is a generic response returned by the server if an SMTP transaction failed. This response is typically returned if too many errors were received in processing.

one solution to error 554

by Ed Snyder221 In reply to error 554 - relay access ...

I suddenly started getting a bunch of these error messages when sending mail to people I'd dealt with recently and/or forever. Noted someone's mention of clock problems and checked this out. Apparently my computer clock had gotten set a couple months ahead, and I guess that is what was messing up my email because when I reset the clock, I was again able to send emails.
