Error after installing sp3

Windows 2000 pro was installed on a new PC. INF, LAN drivers and Internet Explorer 6.0 were installed. SP3 was then installed (after being downloaded from the internet. Immediately after SP3 was installed windows update was done. The web page went to show 4 critical updates being needed to be done. Went to review & install updates. After clicking on Install now a windows error occurs and generates error code 0X800a138f. New drive put in unit and sp3 allowed to be done over internet and works fine. Any ideas on how to fix other than formatting hard drive?
