Error: Can't Write ESCD

By DragonFly ·
I have an ASUS P2B-F Motherboard P2-400, Award BIOS 5/10/99, 64Mb memory, Plenty of cooling, Two HD 13Gb & 4Gb, ATI Rage II+.

I have recently (past two weeks) been getting the message "Error: Can't Write ESCD" on boot-up.

I basically know thatESCD is "Extended System Configuration Data". I am very computer literate, but not on the heavy technical side. I have read some MS Documentation on what this is, but I do not know what is causing this error message to appear. The system seems to function well otherwise.

An issue which may be a result of this error is that I can't get the system to recognize a SoundBlaster AWE64 Plug and Play Card I want to install. I know the card is working well as it just came out of another system.

Can anyone shed some light on my problems... please !!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance...

Regards...

Error: Can't Write ESCD

Well, here's what ASUS has to say:

http://www.asus.com/Products/Techref/Faq/Mbmm/mbmm9909.html

Q5."ERROR: Can't write ESCD" appears when I boot my system. What is wrong?

A : If you didn't change any hardware configuration before the error message, there might be something wrong with the BIOS flash chip. Please load the setup default and see if it helps. If the error message still exists, please ask your local dealer to check the problem for you.

Not very helpful. Is the Soundblaster still in the machine? If it is, take it out and see if the message disappears. Otherwise, see if Award has a flash available for that BIOS.

Thanks very much for the help, however, I had already seen the ASUS info. There are VERY unhelpful, in my opinion. I have seen lots of complaints about this problem from ASUS board owners, but little in the way of solutions from ASUS itself. Hateto say you didn't help me, but the choices here are very limited. Thanks again...

Error: Can't Write ESCD

Seems to be a problem directly related to your motherboard, specifically the BIOS. Contact ASUS. And here are some suggested fixes you can try in the mean time:

-The BIOS is corrupted. Have it replaced or Flashed.
-Change a BIOS jumper.
-serialport configs sometimes cause this, especially if you are using a real (with jumpers) modem.
-If you didn't change any hardware configuration before the error message, there might be something wrong with the BIOS flash chip. Please load the setup default and see if it helps. If the error message still exists, please ask your local dealer to check the problem for you.

Here's a description of the ESCD process:
The ESCD (Extended System Configuration Data) is a method that the BIOS usesto store resource information for both PNP and Non PNP devices in a bit string format. The reason it shows "ESCD Updated Successfully" everytime on boot up is because the system has at least one ISA card in it and it is running Windows95. The ESCD record boot up sequence arranged by Windows95 is different from the ESCD record boot up sequence arranged by the BIOS. On boot up, the system BIOS will attempt to update the ESCD. This will in no way affect system performance. Later versions of the BIOS will address this problem.

You also might want to make sure that once in BIOS, under the heading "PNP/PCI Configuration" that,
Reset Config Data = Yes, and
PNP OS = Yes
