Error Code 10 on CD-Rom Device Manager

By mwhermreck ·
How do you configure a Gateway E-4600 series with a CRD-8483B CDROM running Windows 2000. The auto detect finds the hardware, but results with an Error Code 10 when viewing the hardware thru device manager.

Error Code 10 on CD-Rom Device Manager

I believe that Device Manager Error Code 10 to paraphrase is "device not present or working properly"?

This usually means a physical device or connection problem. Check cable connections for both complete connection and orientation of the cable both at the CD drive and IDE motherboard connection.

If that seems to check out OK, then try a different CD drive if possible. If error duplicates, then try changing out IDE ribbon cable. If error persists, try slaving CD drive on primary IDE along with master drive.

Hope this gives you some direction and usable options. Good luck.

One thing I've done to troubleshoot a CD-ROM drive problem is to use real-mode drivers(i.e. a driver loading in config.sys followed by mscdex.exe). This will probably at least tell you if the system will recognize the CD-ROM drive.
