Error Code 39 on DVD Writer Driver Load

by crosscheck . Updated 15 years ago

I am running XP Pro SP2 on a Dell Dimension Gen 4 and have an HP DVD Writer DVD200j with latest firmware installed. Device Manager sees the drive, but I get the yellow exclaimation mark and it indicates error code 39 (corrupt or missing driver). I have tried uninstalling the device and the driver and reading new hardware – no change. I have tried updating the driver and the wizard says there is no better driver found for the hardware. I have tried running the HP install CD (copied it to a flash card and ran it from a flash card reader since I can’t run it on the DVD drive) – same problem. I can’t do a repair install of Windows since it is on CD and it won’t boot properly from the drive. I tried using an external DVD writer (HP dc5000) through the USB port and it gets the same 39 code error. I tried manually copying the drivers listed in driver details for the device – no luck. Any ideas on how to solve this problem with the catch 22 of not having a working CD or DVD drive? (HP does not have individual driver downloads for these drives on their support site)
