Error: e00084ca "The data being read from the media is inconsistent"

I keep getting these problems that cause my nightly/differential backups to fail. I currently have a B2D (Backup to Disk) setup using BE 9.1
I've checked Veritas support forums and the solutions they offer have not really helped. I've performed a disk scan, changed the Overwrite Protection period to only 1 week (allowing myself more than enough space to back data up). The only thing I have not done is performed a defrag of the drive itself. Any suggestions? I know this is a VERY common BE error.
