Error in Win98SE Installation

After two unsuccessful attempts of installing Win 98SE on a PC having trouble(Page fault in explorer..)in starting Win98 following message is displayed;
"Could not find version of previous installaton...." and the installation couldnot be continued. Previous win98 was on PC. Where can the information of previous installation be available and in what file? By default, it is searching in a some root directory which is not visible by DOS commands like dir & attrib.

corrupt partion table

sounds like your fat table is corrupt this will loose all information on hard drive try fdisking drive remove partions reboot have boot disk in and then recreate partions and try reloading 98 again
