After logging into NT network on a Win 98 Compaq, the blue screen, error 0028-c0282881 in VXD IOS(04) appears. It then gives a black desktop that can be refreshed to normal but most programs then can't be opened. The computer has been reformatted and reinstalled all software from the original disks. The problem is still there.

try re-installing your OS and drivers without the vendor disks. Sometimes the vendor's software will make changes in the registry that will give you errors. Use the MS Win98 OS and not the disks that came with the Compaq.

When reformatting use the fdisk and remove all partitions and then recreate them. The error seems to be with one the VXD drivers. See what devices you have that are using a *.vxd driver from the system controller panel or just search for them. Then remove a device and reboot. You can do the devices one at a time or just remove them all. One device to check quick would be a Zip drive. If you have one remove it and see what happens.

One more thing, once you find the device don't forget to get new drivers!!

Do you have a ZIP Drive installed?? Do you have Iomega Tools installed??? If so, uninstall it, see if the error goes away. If it does, grab the newest version of Iomega Tools and install that. If that doesn't work, trash the tools and let Windows identify the Iomega Drive as a removable and use it as any other drive on your machine.
