Blue screen error message
"Disk write error: unable to write to disk in drive C"

This message pops up after windows 98 se freezes up. There's also a clanging sound emitted fromthe computer prior to the freeze up of windows.

I tried re-installing windows 98 se.

What is the problem and can I solve it without purchasing a new harddrive?

You may be out of luck with your hard drive!

The "clanging" sound could be from the disk, experiencing head-positioner mal-function, or a run-away or flying head(s).

If you can still boot up to your WIN98 desktop, then wait for about 30 minutes doing nothing. If you pass this then try to do scandisk. If it passes, do next a defrag.

If none of the above passes, I hope your PC is still under warranty and check with your vendor for replacement.

to add to the above, if you get to do a defrag, check to see if any of the sectors are corrupted (red diagonal stripe in the block icon). If so, your drive probably is shot.

I experienced a power spike that blew out part of my hard drive, and after a defrag I had an interesting striped pattern in the defrag window. Too bad the drive was shot and unreliable, and prone to lockups and freezes.

Hope that helps,

Your HDD may be damaged (bad sectors). There are a couple of ways in determining at home if you have to change it. Obviously, you cannot perform a defrag operation under WIN as windows is not starting.

Boot to DOS from floppy and either:

from DOS, try copying some files from C:\WIN (windows directory) to a temporary directory you can create under DOS with command "md c:\test".

Or better, try to copy from DOS the Windows swap file (it has the extension *.SWP) with the command "copy c:\*.swp delete.swp".

These may be only the first steps before you invest at least 100 bucks to buy a new HDD.

If you feel you need assistance and willing to try a shot in PC servicing, I'll be glad to help.

Quantum fireball is the problem...these are CHEAP hard drives...

you could attempt to download a low level format utility from quantum/maxtor, copy this to floppy and do a "Low Level Format" to map your hard disk controller "around" the "BAD" spot that has developed, but odds are high that future bad spots will develope anyways.

you need a new drive...

Good luck...
