error message floppy disk failed (40)

By tonnaer ·
When I boot up with my PIII 450 Mhz I got the
error message "floppy disk failed (40)".
The floppy drive does'nt prepare floppies!

Is this a BIOS problem maybe?

Thanks already for help

Does the machine still boot properly, or fail that too?

Could be BIOS or faulty floppy drive. Check all the cables on your drive, and if nothing else works replace the drive. If the BIOS won't let you boot because of it, remove the drive from the BIOS boot order.

Definitely a faulty floppy drive. You should be able to pick one up for next to nothing.

Possible Causes

Format on floppy disk is bad or floppies are bad
Virus that affects floppy drives
Cable has vibrated loose on the MB or Floppy
Cmos has become corrupted

Solutions
Verify floppy is good on another machine
Install or update virus program and scan
Open case and check for loose cables
Enter cmos and verify that floppy is active

Good Luck Lee
