Error message in event viewer....

By singhjunk ·
The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\USBACKUP on the network \Device\NwlnkIpx. The data is the error code.

Where USBackup is the BDC.
I do get this message on different servers and have no idea to what is wrong.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

What you seem to have is a Browser issue.
You'll need to do a lot reading on this. But for now, Try checking for workstations that have File and Print Sharing enabled, go into properties and disable the MBrowser option.
The clients, when accessing resources based on NETBios like clicking on network Neighborhood, needs directions from the Master Browser, which is normaly your PDC, request info from the BDC, which in turn gets the info from the PDC or master browser. By allowing any computer to compete to become a master browser, sometimes, a win9X will be elected MB and if turned off causes a new election and your network will suffer with the delay and all the traffic that the election generates.
Therer is a lot to read on the subject.

Good luck!

Something is not right here. The browser master should normally be the PDC. You didn't describe your network structure, but there can also be a browsing problem when the PDC is multi-homed.

Two Resource Kit utilities should help you track down the problem. Browstat.exe and browmon.exe can both be used to locate the browser master and display it's characteristics and that should tell you whether something is askew.

Calves also offered a lot of good information in his answer and I think his idea of looking for a browser master that shouldn't be one is a good place to start.

Just an FYI - Windows 95/98 machines have a tendency to take over as Master Browsers on the NW!!! Run the statistics from the above answers - this could be the root of your problem!

Just wanted to point out that the BDC may well be the Master Browser if the PDC is acting as the Domain Master Browser. The PDC would maintain a list of Master Browsers (the BDC) and use the list to refer requests to the Browser to the BDC.
