    Error message on boot

    Locked

    by fred c. tucker ·

On a “Sager” 862 notebook computer (Pentium 200 Mhz) an error message on boot up reads, “SD Partition Signature not found.”
I first thought it was the hard drive, but it checks out ok. Operationally, everthing else seems fine too. The only thing I’ve found so far is in the CMOS – I am unable to change the hard drive settings. I’ve gone so far as to remove the hard drive and boot from a floppy – the error message still shows up.
Any thoughts of what would cause this and a possible fix?

Since you can’t change any of the harddrive settings in CMOS maybe try removing the CMOS battery or reseting the CMOS settings to see if that will help?

I encountered an identical message in a Compaq laptop a while back. I tried a number of logical possibilities and nothing seemed to help. I finally thought about a setting in BIOS that is known to cause random problems with some systems. Look in CMOS settings for the virus detect setting. In AWARD BIOS it is under BIOS FEATURES SETUP, and in AMIBIOS, look under ADVANCE CHIPSET SETUP. Toggle this setting off (Disabled) then save settings and reboot. See if that clears the problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I found that the error message refers to a “suspend to disk” function of many laptops/notebooks. An option in the CMOS allows for a mutiple sector mode. By re-enabling this (how it got disabled is a mystery to me, however)the error message disappeared. Apparently the suspend to disk function has to do with power management on notebooks. FYI
