Error message RCApp.exe pops up frequently

    Locked

    by abbyd9 ·

For several days now I have received a pop-up error message that says: “RCApp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” This message causes an Application Error entry in the Event Viewer that says: “Faulting application RCApp.exe, version 1.0.0.2, faulting module kernal32.dll, version 5.1.2600.3119, fault address 0x00012a5b.”

The Event Viewer says this error always follows an occurance of Automatic Live Update.

A Google search shows many other people having this problem lately with both Windows XP sp 2 & 3 and Vista. Suggestions point to Norton Internet Security but Symantec says the problem is with Microsoft. There is no performance problem with this error but it pops up a dozen times a day and is annoying. Does anyone have a clue what this is and how to get rid of it.

Does it give you a path to the file?

If RCApp.exe is in a temporary folder, delete it, but keep it in the recycle bin in case you need it back.

You can download and run CCleaner
      http://www.piriform.com/
which you can set to clear out temp files itself. Then run the registry cleaner in CCleaner to remove registry entries for this file, if any. Always let CCleaner back up what it removes in problem situations like these, in case something needs to be restored.

If htis RCApp.exe is a normal part of the Norton/Symantec installation, it should alredy be installed in a proper program directory.

Error is created by Symantec Live Update

Seanferd, I found a ref to CCleaner in another forum and used it. It does a nice job but didn’t fix this error. The odd thing is the error says “The following files will be included in this error report: C:\Docume~1\me\Locals~1\Temp\WERbb2c.dir00\RCApp.exe.mdmp
But this file does not exist. Also each time the error is created the part that reads after WER changes.

I have stopped this error by disabling Symantec Live Update but I still do not know what caused it. I even downloaded another copy of Live Update and it did not fix it. I found a new entry in Dr. Watson for each error. Here is a sample.

        Microsoft (R) DrWtsn32
Copyright (C) 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved.
        Application exception occurred:
        App: C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Downloads\Updt181\RCApp.exe (pid=464)
        When: 2/8/2009 @ 12:07:42.515
        Exception number: c06d007e

Try completely uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Internet Security by using the Removal Tool

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

That’s what I’m planing to do.

I have only 21 days left on my NIS 2008 subscription and before I install NIS 2009 I plan to completely uninstall NIS 2008 using the tool you suggested. I know now the problem is caused by the Symantec Live Update but don’t know what causes it so I intend to uninstall Live Update along with NIS 2008.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

By the way, I forgot to mention the file that contains the error report in the Temp directory does not actually exist so there was nothing found to delete.
