Error message when changing server name

By mattwilson247 ·
This is what happens:

1. I go to the Network Identification tab and try to change the name of the server from "data" to "server2"
2. It asks for a username and password. I enter an account with admin privleges.
3. An error message pops up saying this:
"The following error occured attempting to rename the computer to 'server2':
The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials."

Any ideas on what this means and how to resolve it?

Are you doing this under a domain admin or local administrator account? There could be a few reasons why this happens, but try the following and it should work:

1. Log onto the machine as local administrator.
2. In Network Properties, go into change, and click on the dot next to 'WORKGROUP' then choose ok so you remove the server from the domain.
3. Now the machine is removed from the domain, rename it.
4. Click on the dot next to domain, and re-add the machine back into the domain.

Hope this helps, I've never seen this problem but this is what I do every time I rename a server :)
