error messages on 30 gig failure

By ffontan1 ·
I have W98 Full Version. The hardware other than maybe Hard Drive is working Fine.
I have put other drives on to check the other hard ware on the PC.
My Problem: When I attach my 30 Gig drive and boot up the PC It will show me the startup information.
It evens shows the windows 98 logo and then will go and check again and show the W98 logo.
Here is where the problem start it will then go back to DOS and give me the following error messages: \Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd.

Note here: It is showing a "D" Drive when in past it was "C" in the DOS mode. With the two error messages.

I am thinking that something need to be set in the registry but do not know how to get to the registry in DOS.
It does not allow me to go the "Safe Mode" as after it sees the second W98 logo
it goes directly to DOS and shows my "C" drive as "D" with the two error messages. \Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd
Then it said its ok to shut down the computer.

I need to know is there a way to get into the registory? and possibly change and what to change?
Also what are these 2 error messages. Input and step by step instructions are needed.

Note: I HAVE CHANGE H.D. and using the same PC to do this message without any problems with hardware and I have also checked the BIOS and old H.D. dir. and fils everything is okay.

Can someone give me feed back. But please do give step by step
instructions.

I Don't believe in Luck. I believe in Love. "And that's what you need today..."

P.S. I check my other computer and it said c:\Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd.

error messages on 30 gig failure

by nikki96 In reply to error messages on 30 gig ...

Which is the master drive and which is the slave? If you have only one drive, be sure that drive is set as master or only with it's jumper config. That is devide dependent, so consult your HDD manual (or website, if there is one) for details.
If you have two drives, the primary (C:) must be set as master and the secondary (D:) as a slave (for most users anyway, that is how it is set up).
Your computer may be attempting to boot from the D Drive if you have two drives.

Need more info to really troubleshoot this. How many drives? What kind (I have two Maxtor HDDs)? Have you set the master / slave jumpers correctly?

How one enters BIOS menu is machine dependent. What kind of computer do you have? My HP lets me in when I press the F1 key fast enough at the blue logo screen. It's a game, I think. :)

That's all I can think of without more info...

Ok, if you have only one hard drive, those are probably the settings for your virtual memory. Windows makes a virtual letter for that, and if you have only one HDD, it is usually D. Since I have two, my virtual HDD is E.
Have you messed with your virtual memory settings lately?

error messages on 30 gig failure

by nikki96 In reply to error messages on 30 gig ...

Oops, I lied, I think. I looked up what those files are supposed to be.
Vfixd.vxd is the Video Phone helper
Vrtwd.386 is the Clock

There's a troubleshooting guide here.

(watch for spaces in the url)

It walks you through a bunch of steps. Might be worthwhile for you to look at.

Sounds like you have corrupt Windows files.

Can you boot into safe mode?

If so, from safe mode, delete the IDE controllers from device manager, and try booting again.
If you are lucky, Windows will re-install your IDE driver correctly.

I have also seen this problem from bad/incompatible RAM in the system.

A couple of times, I have had to delete all of the files in the Windows folders in order to get a clean / functional re-install.

1) I start windows98 Full Version. Its go thought and check the BIOS startup information
and it all check all right.

2) It start to go in to the windows 98 full logo and then it can so it will go in to windows "Safe Mode" again and showthe W98 logo.

Here is where the problem start it will then go back to "C" DOS Mode and give me registry error messages:
\Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd.
can fine file in path or system.ini.

3) Note here: It is showing a firsterror "D" Windows/System when in past it was "C" Windows/Systemin
am thinking that something need to be set in the registry but do not know how to get to the registry and edit registry in DOS Mode.
It does not allow me to go the "Safe Mode" as after it sees the second W98 logo
it goes directly to "C:" DOS Mode and shows my "C" drive
Then it said its OK to shut down the computer.

4) I need to know is there a way to get into the registory? and possibly change and what to change?
Also what are these 2 error messages. Input and step by step instructions are needed.

Can someone give me feed back. But please do give step by step instructions.

5) Note: I have replace the two file vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd to the dir.c:\Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd.
and reboot and get the same error messages:

6) P.S. I check my other computer and it said file are in dir. c:\Windows/System vrtwd.386 and Vfixd.vxd.

We are misunderstanding something. So there is no confusion this is that exact messge: I get after I boot the machine as I explained in my Original Question at the top: Let me clarify again the error. Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstall or setupprogram. If you still want to use the application associated, with the device file, try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file. \windows\system\vrtwd.386 and vfixd.vxd Note: when I press key to continue I get: when I do the next message comes up: "It's now safe to shutdown your computer"
