Error messages when using MS office XP

By Patrick Horn ·
I have a new Dell Latitude laptop with Office XP Pro installed on it. When Excel is started it tries to install some component, it doesn't say what just that it needs to install something, and then I get a MS Visual basic error. It says: Compile error in hidden module: Auto Exec New. When Excel is closed it says: Compile error in hidden module: Auto Exit. What does this mean and why is it doing this? Is this a problem that can be fixed, or am I out of luck? How do I fix this?

Take a look at the contents of the XLStart directory.
Someone reported success by closing Word and Excel and the Opening and Closing PowerPoint!

Try removing items from the start up folder. One of them my be conflicting with excel. Try the following:
1. Quit Excel.
2. Locate and then click the following folder, where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:
drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup

3. Right-click one of the third-party add-in files or folders, and then click Cut.
4. Click Start, right-click My Documents, and then click Paste.
5. Try to start Excel.

If Excel does not start successfully, repeat steps 3 through 5 for each third-party add-in file and folder in the Office\Startup folder.
After you determine which third-party add-in program or folder is causing the problem, move the other third-party add-in files and folders back to the Office\Startup folder.
