Error: No fixed disk present

By michael.spellman ·
I have a latop that recognizes original hard drive, but when I try to put in replacement drive I get an error that says No fixed disk present...
I believe this to be a hard drive issue
Question for all...Does anyone know where I can obtain parts for repairing laptop hard drives?

Is the drive recognized in BIOS? Has it been partitioned and formatted? Are the jumpers, if it has any, set correctly?

Not recognized in the bios...No jumpers...unsure if partitioned and formatted because it is not seen by the bios ...Cannot get it to recognize the drive in either auto or manual in bios ....Not the system as other drives work in it...Also had identical drive in system working fine...System is a Micron zx pIII 750...Drive is a 20 gig IBM travelstar

You haven't specified what type of laptop you have, age of laptop(legacy), or capability. There are many warehouse sites that provide replacement drives. First check with the laptop's manufature site to identify capability issues, they may even provide serial number items for replacement. I could also be experiencing a BIOS/system board capability problem with the replacement drive. Especially with some Legacy systems.

From your description, sounds like drive dead. If under warranty, send back. If not, replace.

The problem could be hardware related, so maybe the new disk is failing. Replace it for a new one.

But what you don't mention : Are both disks the same (Type/Model, Size). If the new one has a bigger size it could also be a BIOS problem. If this is the case download/install the latest bios update for your laptop and try again.

Take it out and bang it on the desk a few times.

Just kidding, I don't have a glue when it comes to laptop HD's.

Good luck
