Error Performing Inpage Operation

By PramodPatil ·
Hi All,

This is very critical issues arose today. I have Maxtor 200GB External Drive. Suddenly since today , while accessing some of the folders I am recieving "Error Performing Inpage Operation" error. These folder's contains very important data.

I can access some other folders on the same drive. So my guess is something wrong with file system. Please advice.

What are my choices of recovering data?? If I can then how ??

I appreciate your support.

Thank You

Pramod

PS : Folder size is displayed as 0k but total drive remains same as before. say previously "abcd" folder was 200MB , and total HD remaining size 50G , now folder size displayes as 0k but total remaining still 50GB

My guess is either the drive or controller is bad. You can try something like Easy Recovery Pro (my favorite) but I'd get the data off that drive. If it's still under warranty try ang get it rma'd. Maxtor also has diag tools you can download from their site. Just mho.

You'll probably get a response from TheChas. He's the hardware guru.

Cheers.

Just advise. I wouldn't try any diagnostics tools that attempt to write test the drive. The first thing to do is try and get the data off. There's various data recovery software out there get something you like.

The message is explained by Microsoft at the following link. But just an explaination.

I would not rule out a memory issue either in this case.. As anything you do in windows uses memory addresses to access and call the file system up so you can view it..

If this folder has large files.. i.e. movies large apps etc.. this might be a possibility..

I had this happen long ago couple of year on my WD 250 gig drive, cant recall what I did to rememdy it, but I think it got fixed when I changed motherboard.. including ram etc..

I will post back if I find the site I had that talked about this.

One thing of note, have you tried to turn off your "enable write caching on the drive? This may help..

You do this by going to my computer>right click the drive>hardware>go toyour drive>properties..

Worth a shot I guess..

Good Luck

Thanks for all your input. I ended up buying another hard drive. Recoverd the data and formatted the previous drive.I was not able to reach any conclusion but guess is due to high size of the folder , for some reason File System got damaged. Drive physically is not damaged.

Now new and old drive both are happy and working together :) At this point I would like to close the question.

Error Performing Inpage Operation

I saw this thread listed as closed - didn't know whether to re-open or start a new one...

This message is directed at PramodPatil, but if anyone else can help, that'd be much appreciated.

I have the "Error Performing Inpage Operation" error on a Maxtor drive. You mentioned that you recovered the data on the drive - given that I have the same problem, can you let me know how you recovered it? Ideally, I would like to avoid using a data recovery firm because of the expense. If it helps, it's a Maxtor 300GB Serial ATA HD 7200/16MB/S-ATA-150 run in a USB enclosure.

Thanks,

Kelly
