Error playing DVDs and games

Anytime I try to play a DVD or CD-ROM game it always comes up with a VMI error and does not launch the game of DVD. I have a brand new dell dimension 3000 desktop running windows XP. Is there a way I can fix this or do I have to send the PC back.

  You’ll have to offer some more details.
  
  What is the full error, OS, Video card etc.
  
  Do you have the latest BIOS and Graphics updates from DELL’s website?

    Sorry, you did say it was XP but this couldbe due to many things, post the full error and it will help.
