Error starting program.....

By todd.baker@tulsaautocllct ·
When first booting a WIN 9X computer I've had some computers display "Error Starting Program, #$%%.dll not found." I look in the Start Up folder but nothing is there. How do I determine what program is calling for this dll file?

Just boot the system through a floppy. And then do a system transfer and check out after loggin out whether this works.

When booting the computer, watch for the "Starting Windows 9x" and immediately push F5.

You will get a startup options menu. Select a logged startup. Then, after the machine boots, look at a file in the C folder called BOOTLOG.TXT. This filemay contain helpful information.

Reboot your machine and hold down the F8 key. When the startup menu appears select option #5 Step by Step Confirmation. You will be prompted to allow every step of the startup process. When you get the above error you'll know which program is actingup.

I can't help you find out what program wants the .dll, but once you have an idea, you can do the following to keep it from starting:

If this machine is Windows 98, you can go to <Start><Programs><Accessories><System Tools> and start "System Information".
Go to the "Tools" menu, then select "System Configuration". There you will find tabs for every place Windows looks to start a program automatically. You can also selectively disable programs from this program.

If your machine is 95/NT/2000, you'll need to go digging through the registry.

WARNING: DON'T DO THE FOLLOWING IF YOU'RE NOT COFORTABLE WORKING WITH THE WINDOWS REGISTRY!

Go to [HKey_Local_Machine]/Software/Microsoft/Windows(or Windows NT)/Current Version/Run and .../Current Version/RunServices. There you will see the rest of the programs Windows is loading at startup. To remove one, highlight it in the right-hand window and press your delete key.
