I think this is nearly always caused by a hardware error or hardware not being properly detected during the install process.

You should make sure that all the hardware installed in your computer is designed to work with Win98, and make sure it is properly connected and in good working order.

Does the install process finish?, or are you getting this error before the install has finished? If the former, you should press F8 and enable boot logging. This will create a bootlog.txt file which will list each driver and whether it loaded properly. We can then identify the hardware/driver that is causing the problem.

However, a more immediate solution may be to simply start from scratch and fdisk, reformat, then reinstall.

If you get the same error, can you post a comment saying where in the install process this occurs and quote the exact error message displayed plus any other information displayed on the screen.

Good luck

Ok, but have you enabled boot logging, and examined the file?

I had the same problem installing from a win98 cd.
I had to get another harddrive. formatting, Zero fill and partitioning did not fix the problem for me.

It's hardware thing. I would think it's something to do with the chipset drivers. Does the error come up after the first reboot of the install process ? If this is it then you need to start the mcahine in safe mode and install the chipset drivers. Reboot then the install process should continue. Chipset drivers are usually intel or via. Goto and d/l the chipid.exe anf this well let you know what chipsewt drivers to get. If it's a VIA chipset then goto for those
