    errors after swapping hard drive

I swapped out my 2 smaller hard drives
with a Maxtor 20GB hard drive. I used the
Maxtor floppy to partition the drive and
copy my C partition from my old drive to
the new one. It encountered an error at
the very end. I used xcopy to copy my
other partitions to the new partitions, etc.
Tech Support at Maxtor told me that
obviously the Maxtor copy didn’t work for
me, and is suggesting I start over, install
Windows, and then drag and drop the
rest. The errors refers to amultitude of
    programs referring to kernel32.dll,
wsock32.dll and sens.dll. My computer is
unusable after booting to Windows. Any
ideas other than Maxtor’s? How about
ghosting (a cheap way and that may run
from DOS)? If I ghost, will it create an
exact copy of my old C partition without my
having to delete everything on my new C
partition? Any help is appreciated. I want
to avoid having to reinstall everything, do
updates and redo all preferences, etc.

Hi. You can use ghost but it will overwrite what you have done on your new partition. What I would do is slave your new drive and use diskcopy from powerquest. It will allow you to copy your primary drive. Once that is done you can boot to your maxtor(make it the master) and using partition magic move the rest of your info. Partion Magic will remap your drive letters and give you one big partion. However you must be using an OS that is not Fat 16. Hope this helps

Thank you very much! I did exactly that less the Partition Magic which I may use to resize a partition after I get it converted to FAT32. My drive is working, I’m up and running, and I’m very happy!

Have you tried reinstalling windows ontop of itself (Same directory)? This should keep data installed there, but rebuild any flaws on your windows install.

I did reinstall Windows again, but it
did not improve the situation at all.

Try reformat your new drive with the DOS Format instead of the Maxtor utility.

The best thing is to use the ghost program.
You can create an exact copy of your old HD/partition. After ghosting your new HD/partition will have everything as it was on the old HD. When you use the Ghost it’s possible to change the size of a new partition. You can run the Ghost program from DOS.

You don’t need to format your HD/partiton – the Ghost will do it for you. You can either ghost your whole HD or the partition only.
