I think you need to ask yourself several questions, from which the design of your labs will "naturally fall".

What do you want the students to get out of this lab? Will they be learning programming, or some other aspect of I.T. or are the labs toprovide access to end-user tools (like Office suite applications, the Internet, and so on)?

What infrastructure is already in place? What standards exist in your organisation? Will they need access to an existing Internal email system? How about an external Email system (e.g., @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, etc.)? Will they be storing files on the local PCs, removable media, or network file shares? Do you care about backups? (Some "lab" environments are sufficiently dynamic that the images are simply reloaded between classes.)

You describe these students as "@risk". I don't know what this means, but are there any special issues that might mean the computers need to be especially easy to use, or particularly durable (as examples). Is security an issue? (In what way: do you need to secure the equipment and the facility?)

In any case, I would build each lab as a discrete switched LAN segment, then drop all of these into a router, and head off to an appropriate Internet connection. Each lab/LAN would have at least one printer.

Make sure you have top quality Virus software and keep it updated with a subscription from the provider.

Make sure, if you have an Internet connection, that you have some policies about what can go out and what can come in. Also ensure that you have the tools to enforce that policy. (Your firewall can help.)

Hello,
We are activating more than 10 labs for students who are studying for BA degree. You can imagine that these students are not dumb and know what are the weak poins of system.
Here are the few suggestions which may help:
1. Describe the purpose of the labs. (@risk students, I think those who like to crack or hack to the systems...)
2. Try to keep the same hardware for these labs. This makes your maintenance work much more easier.
3. Prepare images for workstations (e.g. ghost)
4. Most important : MAKE A POLICIES FOR THEM :
a) If you use Windows 2000 server : Your job can be easy. Install Active Directory and assign group policies for computers and users.
b) If you use Netware Server : Use ZEN works for these purposes too.

5. Try to keep a native mode of software.
