Recently I started reading a new source for news, this being Foreign Policy. Today they had an article called Seven Questions: The Ethanol Effect at http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=3756
.
This is interesting, what is happening is that that the price of ethanol is now being set based on the price of gasoline. Why, because it is now becoming an energy source. The point was raised that the consumption of corn in the united states as a food staple really isn’t that large, so what does it matter. But, we use corn for animal feed and alot of third world countries do use corn for a food staple.
So, what do we do? Feed the world and be at the mercy of the terrorists? Or, use ethanol as a starter option to move to various alternate energy?
Remeber farm aid? Because farmers were going bankrupt? This is their chance to actualy make a come back. Hell, they made the point that the corn harvest of Iowa(one state) is larger then the harvest of all of Canada. I mean, damn.
I do not want the world to starve, but I sure do not want the United States to be at the mercy of middle eastern countries for our energy sources. If corn can help solve that issue and also support what was a struggling economy in the United States. I say we go for it.
And to think, that it now also gives the United States another Foreign Policy leverage option. Who says the United States can’t adapt.
