    Ethernet Card for PowerMac 7100/80

    Locked

    by susu ·

I was given a PowerMac 7100/80 and I would like to install an ethernet NIC. The only slots available are some funky looking ones that do not exist in the PC environment. Can anyone suggest a network card for this machine?

This funky looking slot you are referring to is called a NuBus slot. NuBus is to the Macintosh as ISA is to the PC. Just like ISA, NuBus has been replaced by PCI. Apple discontinued support for NuBus a few years ago, but there are still companiesthat make NICs for this old standard.

One such company is Farallon Technologies. Check out their product page at http://www.farallon.com/products/fast/cards/fecards.html

Mike Weimar is right. I forgot about those AAUI ports. You’re better off getting an adapter for that port. They’d be cheaper than buying a new NIC. Also, 100Mbps is not possible on a NuBus slot. Even though they sell 100Mbps NuBus NICs, the NuBus (like ISA for PC’s) cannot physically go that fast. It will go faster than 10Mbps, however.

Thanks for the info. It was easier, however, to buy a tranceiver.

I have some 7100 computer at my work that
have NICs in them. I may be able to sell you
one out of the computers we have. The only
thing is that my last day at work is Friday
the 22nd. Contact me via e-mail ASAP if you
would like me to see if I can sell you

The 7100/80 has 10Mbit Ethernet on the motherboard. You will need what is called an AAUI adapter to plug into the AAUI port (this is the Ethernet port). You should be able to find this adapter at any Mac mail order house for less than $30. If you need 100Mbit support you will need a NuBus card, but I do not think that 100Mbit on NuBus will be cheap.

Thanks. That worked great! I was amazed. I plugged it in and it worked! I never thought I’d say this but, why can’t PC’s work like this?
