Event Viewer alerts, services not workin

By przemekf ·
I'm a student studying for my MCSE. I have a two machine network at home: 1.W2K Pro. and the other is NT4 Server. My Windows 2000 is working finr and connects to the net. My server (just for leaning) is comming up with Event Viewer Alerts, W3SVC/MSFTPSVC/GOPHERSvc/Service Control Manager...and Dhcp. lots of Alerts. When I click on Cntrl panel> Network> Services> and workstation service I get : Cannot Configurethe software component. I've reinstaled TCP/IP and the NIC cards... what can I do, please explain !
Thank you in advance.

Good one. Well first thing I would do is reapply the latest service pack. Then remove workstation service from networking, then put it back. Reboot.

The W3SVC/MSFTPSVC/GOPHERSVC are all related to IIS Server. Currently you have misconfigure the service for your web service. If you don't need the IIS right now, you can remove it from the service tab of the network panel if its IIS 2.0. With that done, you should be away with your 3 problems. Most DHCP problems related to config file being corrupted. Since this is not a production server then I guess you didn't backup the configuration files for it then. If you didn't then just delete the scope and add new ones. If that isn't the problem then please email me and give me the exact message posted by your alert message and I'll be gladly to walk you through the process of fixing the problem one by one. Most problem leads to the next. So sometimes fixing the first few ones might help cure all the rest. If you're not in the IIS section yet then I suggest you remove it because IIS alone is very complicated by itself. I hope that helps and be gladly to walk you through the process to obtain your MCSE if you wi

There is no software component to configure for the workstation service, that is not an error. What are the errors you are getting, are they failures or just informational? If a service is failing it may be because the component is not configured. Also you can look up the error number or statement in the log on microsoft's website.
If you are trying to learn, I would remove all but one or two extra services to play with. Trying to troubleshoot a server with every service loaded complicates things.

they seem to be errors since this is a rescent thing. I can't access the server from my other machine and vice versa.
