When opening an existing file in Excel, the following message appeared: Program Error, Pure virtual function call, close. What does this mean?

It sounds like an error that refers to the 'virtual function call library'... which would lead me to believe it's something corrupt in the spreadsheet, or in the Excel installation (or a DLL) that's triggered by this particular spreadsheet

Can you open the file on another PC with it's own installation of Excel? If you can, try uninstalling and reinstalling Excel on the PC in question.

If not, you've most likely got a corrupt file on your hands.

In addition, go to:

http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?fr=0&SD=GN&LN=EN-US

and do a search on all Microsoft products and the question:

pure virtual function call

It'll turn up about 6 hits, none that specifically refer to Excel, but that point to various things that might cause the problem.

Specifically "Q125749 - PRB: Cause of the R6025 Run-Time Error" talks about the 'root' of the problem from the C++ compiler standpoint.
