Excel 97 Invalid File Format

By anejako ·
Dear All:

A user whom I support saved an Excel 97 file into c:\windows\desktop\briefcase (they are using Windows 95). A couple of weeks later, they tried to open the file, but recieved the error message "file format is not valid." They tried renaming the file, and copying it and pasting it to different locations, all to no avail.

Why would this happen to a user of Excel 97? He did not report anything unusual occurring when he was saving the file originally.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think mostly the problem was caused by resident Antivirus program. Most antivirus such as Norton Antivirus, PC-Cillin, MCAfee will perform automatic virus scanning on the background.
For MS Office files, the antivirus software will remove the macros behind the scene but sometimes the macros removal is not correct and as the result we can not open the MS Office files anymore.
To recover the data on the Excel file, create a blank worksheet and create cell reference to the damaged Excel files.
