Excel cell linked to data in Access

by jperez1 . Updated 18 years, 11 months ago

Hi,

We currently have an Excel spreadsheet that contains part numbers, vendor names, prices, etc. on a a tab (worksheet) within the file.

On another tab, we have it set up so that if we enter a valid part number in any cell in column ‘B’ it will automatically fill in the remaining cells in that Row with the vendor name, price, etc.

Two problems with this approach; we have more than 65,000 items which exceeds the limit for Rows in Excel.

The bigger problem is that we must type the part number in exactly as it exist or it will not recognize the part. We would like to be able to enter something ‘close’ to the part number and see either a list of items matching that string.

Was thinking we could put all our data into an Access database (pretty straight-forward) and then configure our Excel file to look into Access to get the data.

I know you can link between the two but haven’t found the answer on how to do it the way I describe above.

In summary;

We would like to have a cell that when we start to type a part number (or ‘any portion’ of a part number) it will offer us matching data from a specified field in Acess. If we select one of the matching items it will fill in that cell and several others in that row with data from the Access database. (BTW, the Excel file will have to be in a different directory than the Access files…) In addition, we must also be able to enter part numbers that do not exist in the database into the cell.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
