Excel Col. width copy from book 1 to 2nd

By kays ·
How can you copy the column width from one workbook to another workbook? When I select a range of information in a sheet in one workbook and try to use the paste or paste special, the width of the original columns are not retained. I must then reformat the new worksheet. I am working in Excel 97. I do not see where Styles allow for any kind of column setting. Would a macro have to be written to take care of this? Does Excel 2000 take care of this problem?

To copy the column width from one workbook to another, you should copy the column not the range of data on the column. To copy the column:
- Right click the column title and select Copy
- Go to another workbook
- Right click a column and select either Paste or Insert Copied Cells command.

I can't remember if this works in 97 or not, but it's worth a try. To copy just the column width (no data or anything else)...

1. Click one time on the column heading so the entire column is selected
2. Click the format painter button on the standard button bar (the button that looks like a paintbrush).
3. Switch over to the workbook you want the column widths copied to and click one time on the column you want the width setting copied to so that the column (or series of columns if youwant more than one) are selected.

This copies just the formatting of the column from one workbook to another. You should see the change instantly. Keep in mind that this takes any font formatting, etc. as well, but only formats and not any datathat might be in the column.

Hope this helps. If you have trouble with it or would like more help on this issue, feel free to e-mail me.
