Excel crashes when open

Running office 2000 sp2 on a win98 128 ram plenty of space. When I open excel it freezes and gives me a low memory error. Excel is the only program that does this. I tried openning lots of other programs at the same time and the computer responces fine. Only when I open Excel does it freeze. I tried uninstalling Office and re-installing any suggestions ?
