Excel File Sharing & W9X Briefcases

By stephen.laluna ·
When you create a briefcase using Windows 98 (or 95) the Excel files that are a part of the briefcase become "shared" automatically. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Is there a registry edit to stop this? If I want the file to be "shared" I will set it that way by myself. This does not happen with briefcases in Windows NT4

Excel File Sharing & W9X Briefcases

by Mikel~T In reply to Excel File Sharing & W9X ...

The reason the files become shared automatically is because the briefcase was designed to allow for a quick update of files in the briefcase when traveling from home to work, or from a laptop to a desktop. It basically allows for a sync to be performed so that you don't have to copy and paste all the files. My suggestion would be to not create a briefcase, but a folder to store your excel files in. If you do want to share the files, just drop them into the briefcase, or remove them to stop sharing them.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Putting them in a folder defeats the purpose of using the briefcase. In Windows 95 and Windows NT4, the files are not changed to shared files.

I have noticed that it does not make them shared on my machine which is Win 95. It does make them shared on Win 98.

The problem did not exist on Windows 95 nor on Windows NT 4. It started happening on Windows 98. It would be pointless to "downgrade" the machine to Windows 98.

The first answer looks good to me. If that doesn't work, try something else. Hope this helps.

Since you rejected all those answers, why don't you just close your question?

Change the settings in your registry.
