Excel Format Changes

By jstobbe ·
We have one Excel Power user that will create and save an Excel Spread Sheet. When he reopens the spread sheet, column widths will have changed and some cells contain a series of #'s. Occassionally the font in selected cells will also have been changed. The problem is intermitten. Have reinstalled Excel but the problem remains.

The #'s are becuase of numebers being in the cells and the width not being wide enough to display all the digits.
Is the user saving the spread sheet each time after fixing it?

All cells display. User saves spread sheet. Opens spread sheet and columns are not wide enough to display contents

This is just a wild guess, but if your power user has a default template workbook (BOOK.XLT in the XLSTART folder), and that default template has a macro that runs on load, and if that macro reformats cells or columns based on some worksheet content, it would look like nothing was happening until the macro found the right conditions, then it would reformat the columns. It's a stretch, but it would be worth checking for Book.xlt and renaming it, then letting him create a new workbook to see if the problem repeats.
You could do the same thing on a sheet that is messing up by fixing the column widths, disabling macros, saving and closing the workbook, then opening it back up. If it works ok, you've got a macro problem.
Your reinstall of Excel would not have replaced Book.xlt.

The only time I've seen widths and fonts revert is when I've opened a text-type file (csv for example) and saved it as csv or txt.

It should have been saved as an Excel workbook.

Have seen same problem, try opening file on a PC that has a different size monitor. Usually happens when user has a 17" monitor, open on a 15" - sorry, but cannot recall resolution, except user kept 15" monitor and problem mysteriously stopped and never returned. . .

Hope this helps,
Eric
