Excel launched in IE Window

By roddyp ·
I have some excel workbooks on a ftp server. My users click on these files and usually the Excel worksheet is launched inside Excel and the user uses the file and saves it the FTP server just fine... BUT

Some of the XP machines launch the Excel worksheet within the Browser Window. This causes a big problem with my users and I want stop IE from doing this but can't find good information on how to do that... Can you help?

File Associations

by julie.schneider In reply to Excel launched in IE Wind ...

Could .xls files be associated with Internet Explorer as the application to open the file on some of these machines?

You may want to go into Tools/Folder Options) File Types tab in Windows Explorer and see if the file type xls is associated with Internet Explorer instead of Excel.

Launching programs in an Iframe

In IE/tools/security, uncheck launch programs and files in an Iframe. That will force the files to open Excel by itself and not in IE.
