Excel opens .xls:1 and .xls:2

I have a user who has done something to one of his worksheets. If you open worksheet.xls it opens two excel files worksheet.xls:1 and worksheet.xls:2 both apear to be the same worksheet. Anyone have any ideas on what excel is trying to do?
