When I try to open an excell file, I get a message that excell has created an error in user.exe. How do I repair or fix this problem.

Try reloading office if that dont work try renaming user.exe to user.old. It could be that it has become corrupt, Microsoft has a lot of questions about this type and most answers point to compleatly removing office and its dll files. And reinstalling it, try the simple things first. Scandisk, Defrag and remove tmp, gid, chk files. Clear cookies, temporary internet files and history.

First make sure MSOffice is properly installed. From Explorer go the path where the file is located. While holding the Shift Key double click the file to open, this will ignore the errors. If you could open save it in a different name.

You have two repair tools which I would begin with. At the base level let's make certain that user.exe is not corrupt. If you have Windows 98, go to START | PROGRAMS | ACCESSORIES | SYSTEM TOOLS | SYSTEM INFORMATION..... From within here go to the menu Bar and select > TOOLS | SYSTEM FILE CHECKER run this utility selecing to restore any files found to be corrupted from the original Win98 CD or in the C:\windows\options\cab directory if your computer was OEM installed.

Next you have the Microsoft Office repair utility, which can repair errors in the Office installation. To start this utility go to START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, select your copy of MS Office and select ok, (as if you were going to uninstall)from here a screeen will pop-up giving you the option to reinstall or repair, and select the option to repair.

Now that you know that user.exe is in good working order and your office installation should be in good working order, attempt to open your excel document once more. Did this fix the problem? If not make certain that your File Associations are correct for .xls extensions. If you can launch Excel and open the file from within Excel, file associations could need to be reset.
