    Excessive Memory

    Locked

    by missouri man ·

With 640 megs mem installed with Win98SE, is this too much mem for this OS? I’ve been told that anything more than 512 causes the sys to basically reduce the amount of space available in Vcashe and causes the system to slow down. Therefore, excess mem is not beneficial. Is this true, and should I remove 128 megs from my board?

    Any answers?

Actually, you MAY notice it to reduce your performance a bit. I believe that really anything larger than 256mg RAM in win98 becomes a waste. Data stored above that basically becomes lost because windows doesn’t know what to do with it. ME howeveris alot better with memory management but seems to be too flaky of a OS to run.

      Hope this helps.
      640k.

This is a case where too much a good thing becomes a bad thing. Because your PC uses DRAM (dynamic read only memory), the memory is constantly being refreshed by your CPU or memory controller (thousands of times per second). The more memory, the more there is to be refreshed, and you will actually get to a point where you will see a performance problem. I can’t imagine you are running any software that would require more than 256mb.
