Exchange 2000 takes 6gb instead of 1

By Fabio DPI NET ·
Hi,

in my server exchange 2000 takes 6GB for the data files (priv1.edb and priv1.stm). But listing the mailboxes i see it should take just 1 GB. Is there any way i can clean the database and let it get just what it need?

thanks
Fabio

This is part of a TecRepublic Exchange Tip. You can probably search this site and get the a more complete anaswer to your question.

OFFLINE COMPACTION OF THE EXCHANGE DATABASE, PART 2
To run eseutil and compact your database, perform the following steps:

1. Do a full backup of your system.

2. Stop all Windows NT Exchange services and services related to
Exchange Server.

3. From an MS-DOS command prompt, switch to the drive letter that
contains enough available disk space to perform an offline
defragmentation.

4. From the command prompt, type one of the following commands: ESEUTIL
/d /ispriv; or, to direct the temporary database to another drive,
ESEUTIL /d /ispriv tG:\Folder1\TempDfrg.edb, replacing G:\Folder with
the drive letter and folder you want to use for the temporary database.

Offline compaction may take several hours depending on the size of your
database and hardware. When it's complete, back up your system
immediately to ensure you can recover the database in case of failure.

Good luck......
