I have a server running Exchange 2003. For the past year+, when our organization receive emails with a pdf attachment from one specific domain when the pdf is opened the user gets a “There was an error opening this document. the file is damaged and could not be repaired.” from acrobat.
These files have been attempted to be opened with everything from Acrobat 5.5 full and Reader through 8 Pro and Reader. This has been happening with pretty much every user in my system from this one domain. Today, while revisiting this problem every email from that domain with a pdf attachment opened and transmitted fine, but any sent to other people in my organization gave the same error.
I had the user with the corrupted pdf forward it to me and I had the same error show for me. I opened the two copies of the pdf in notepad and found that the corrupted one was missing the last section of the file about halfway thorough the blank spaces after the
tag in the file. The only difference between the users computer and mine is that the user is using outlook 2007 upgraded from outlook 2003 and I am using a fresh 2007 installation.
When I had someone from the domain that we are having problems with email the attachment to one of the users in my organization having the problem, my office email and my gmail account, the user had the same error, when I opened it an hour later I had the same problem but my gmail received it fine. That was the only time I received a corrupt pdf attachment due to this problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any ideas? I am going to completely uninstall office from the user in my organizations machine and install a fresh copy of 2007 and see if there is something lingering from the 2003 installation that is causing this.
