From the question, I can assume that you have multiple domain controller in your network, and the exchange server is not the schema master. This will occurs when you didnt remove exchange 2000 properly (From the network). Windows 2000 network will keep all the objects in the schema master in forest level and global catalog server in domain level. I will recommend you use other server name. If you insist to use back the old server name, do use the schema administrator to remove the objects in your forest.

Cheers!

Two options -
rename computer

or

if you have another exchange 2000 server you could go into exchange admin and remove the server object from the first administrative group.

if this is your only exchange server you will have to rename it
cp

exchange 2k instalation error!

by ChrisSaw In reply to exchange 2k instalation e ...

Hi Navjun,

I experienced the same problem last week because my first installation had failed caused by a DNS misconfiguration. When I tried to re-install E2K, I received the same error message. I did not knew at that time what to do. But the message told me that there was still a reference to my child domain name in the primary Active Directory.

So, I renamed my child DC and re-install E2K on it. It pass through with no problem.

Hope it help.

Hi Navjun,
OK, I found something that may be will help you. I did it today and it works perfectly.

If you can't rename your server, then you absolutly need to delete every reference of your E2K server in the Active Directory.

First, you need to remove your Exchange Server 2000. To do that, Uninstall your E2K from the DC with parameter /REMOVEALL.

After that, delete every registry key as described in Microsoft document (Q26037.

Now you need to delete reference of E2K in Active Directory.
To do that, open Active directory Sites and Servers. By default, you see only one entry in that MMC e.g. (Sites).

Click on View menu and check the option (Show Services Node). You will see a new entry in the MMC as (Services).

Click on the + sign at the left of Services and you will see the refefence of your Exchange Server 2000. Delete it. Once it's done, open your Active Directory Users and Computers and delete Exchange references (Users and Groups).

Once it's done, you can install your E2K from scratch.
You will need to re-install your exchange with /forestprep and /domainprep.

Hope it will help you...

Christian
