Exchange 2K users sharing a mailbox

By jodyc ·
A client requested that I setup about 15 users with different login names to share one mailbox in Exchange 2k. I setup this up by creating a mailbox and gave permissions to the group of users under the advanced tab in Exchange. It seems to allow more than one user to be able to attach to the mailbox and use it at the same time. Is this going to be ok ? or is it going to be my worst nightmare?

Any comments or suggestions ?

Exchange 2K users sharing a mailbox

by Naamor In reply to Exchange 2K users sharing ...

For the life of me, I do not understand why anyone would want to share a mailbox among 15 users.
The problems I see down the road are users either inadvertently or on purpose deleting others e-mail, tracking inappropriate e-mail both incoming and outgoing, and lack of privacy between the 15 users.

Good Luck Bro

You cannot share one mailbox with different usernames.
You have to give them all a separate mailbox.
What you can do is to create a public folder, give the people who should be in there (they need a separate email account)the right to it, set the email name of the public folder to whatever it should be.
This should do the trick, all users with rights to this directory cab see the incoming mails.
Now set the reply adres of these users to this public folder email address, so that if outsidersmail a reply they will send it to this email address, rather then tho the individual user.
Now delete the users own smtp (internet) email address, so that they cannot receive internet mail anymore.
Remember that internally they still can send email from their own useraccount, and receive mail there.

Actually you can. I have 15 casual users in one department all sharing the same mailbox and calendar. Very weird !! You do this by using the advanced exchange options in the AD. For the life of me I cannot find that crazy option again. Basicallyit lets you set the rights on the mailbox. If someone can tell me where that option is again, Please let me know I will give you the points.

Thanks

Jody
