Exchange 5.5

By jsarinana ·
I finely got me a new server that will replace an old P1 that was used as a print and small file server. I purchase this new server with the intentions of it becoming our new Exchange 5.5 server on our Domain. Exchange was purchaed before I started to work here but was never installed. Question ? how critical is the name of the server ? it would be a piece of cake if I named it the same as the server that it's replacing. Server name is plotroom. I am new to Exchange and I will be doing some reading on Exchange installations this week end, any other tips ?

In Exchange the name of the server is critical. Once you create it, you will NOT be able to change it without reinstalling Exchange. Make sure you plan out your Exchange environment carefully before you begin.

You're definitely on the right track reading up before you start. I'd take a look at microsoft technet as well. www.cramsession.com has some great study guides too...they have a good one for Exchange 5.5 (I'm getting ready for the MCP exam in Exchange just now).

Good Luck! Hope this helps a little...

As mentioned in Answer1, the name of the Exchange Server is critical. It is by this name that your exchange server will be indicated in the MX records at your or your ISP's DNS. Also you will not be able to change this name once you install exchange. Apart from the link given in Answer 1, these two links should also help you

As the previous answer suggested, It is critical and you will not be able to change it once you installed Exchange.
Howerver Jayanth (Answer 2) is wrong that the name you choose for your Exchange server is the one that your ISP will point to. Your ISP will point to an IP Address and not to a NETBios name.
