Exchange 5.5

I am running exchange 5.5 and all the clients have windows 9x machines with outlook 98. What is the best way to allow these users to go to different computers in different locations and still have all their mail and what not?

Well, you can install profiles for each user on each computer. That way no matter what PC the user goes to, they can get their mail. However this may be a bit time consuming, it seems to be one of the only methods other than using something fancy like OWA.

Just make sure in Outlook/Tools/Options/ you set it to "Prompt for a profile to be used"

I do not know if this will work and it is a worth try to share you my proposed ideas of solutions:

If the number of roving users are few, say 5 to 10, then maybe you can have Outlook98 configured with multiple profiles. Every time a user logs in to a computer and runs Outlook, he just have to select his profile and thus be able to access his mails.

Another way would be to install Outlook Web Access (OWA) on your Exchange. Your users will use IE Explorer or web browser and login to Exchange.

Hope this helps!

How many client computers do you have? There is a fairly straight-forward procedure to enable roaming profiles on 98 machines in the Win98 resource kit. The concern with roaming profiles is always BANDWIDTH. If this is a good solution for your network depends alot on information you have not given. I can scan the data to a file if you don't have, or can't get the resource kit.

This is precisely the situation that roaming profiles were designed for - Microsoft has a TechNet article (Q161070) that describes, step-by-step, how to create and deploy these profiles.

Outlook is very poor at doing roaming profiles and Microsoft's solutions are not easy to implement and don't always work, especially on Win9X clients.

Because of this my company has developed a freely available solution to make roving/roaming prifiles a lot easier. It is in use on thousands of computers all over the world.

You can find it at http://www.redfox.co.uk/olclient

Should do the trick for you!
