Exchange 5.5 - can't add Mailbox

By tobyheaford ·
When adding or changing a mailbox - the following error is displayed:

The directory is busy. Wait a few minutes and try again. Microsoft Exchange Directory ID no: DS_E_BUSY.

This problem is discussed in Q261091 and can be fixed by cycling thedirectory service. This is as good as bouncing the server. Has anyone seen this problem & been able to assertain what might cause the directory to become locked and not unlock?

The system is NT4sp5 Exchange 5.5sp3 and has been up for 48 days.
thanks,
Toby Heaford

Exchange 5.5 - can't add Mailbox

We have run into this from time to time. Best bet is to do an IS integrity check, (just to be safe), and install SP3 for Exchange.

I've also seen this on slow machines that are overloaded, and in conjunction (possibly just due to the overloading)with McAfee NetShield/Groupshield on the server.

I think your best bet is performance monitoring the server, and application of NT SP5 or 6a and Exchange SP3.

Exchange 5.5 - can't add Mailbox

Don't think the box is overloaded as it's only serving about 80 clients - it's a dual PII 450 with 256mb. I have a mailsweeper box to do the virus scanning so there's no scanner installed.

There's no memory leak or performance/OS reliability problems other than the said issue so it's a bit strange.

Thanks anyway

I don't have the answer for you, but I think you're right that it's not an overloaded server. I'm not particularly proud of it, but up until recently one of our offices was supporting 80 Exchange users on a Pentium-75 with 112meg of RAM. We had problems, but we never saw a locked directory.

Nor should the uptime be a problem.

Big help, huh? By the way, is this a single-server site? I'm wondering if it's a replication issue?

Have you tried running the isinteg utility on the DS database? Run in check mode first to see if any problems are found in the database. If any are found run in fix mode. Make sure and do a backup of your database before performing this procedure. Here is a sample of what you can run at the command line to run this utility.

C:\EXCHSRVR\BIN> isinteg -pri -l c:\systest\private.log

The once the utility has run check out the log at c:\systest\private.log
