Exchange 5.5 Delivery

By mzitello ·
I am using Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2000 as clients. I would like to set the delivery times so that the emails are only checked at certain intervals... for example I want the Outlook client to only check the server every 15 minutes for any new messages. Is this possible? Would changes be made in Exchange 5.5 or Outlook 2000?

If your Outlook clients are configured to use Internet Email instead of the Exchange server, do the following:

In Outlook, click on tools, options, Internet Email. In the middle of that window. there's a check box for "Check my local network connections for new mail every ___ minutes". Change it whatever interval you want.

I didn't find the same options if you're configged as Exchange server.

Exchange doesn't control when the clients check their mail.

You can only do this if you have your users use local (personal) folders rather than connecting directly to their Exchange mailbox folders. If you set them up this way, you have the option of setting the synchronization interval for the .pst file to whatever number of minutes you want. I'm not sure why you would want to do this, though, as it would increase rather than decrease network traffic. If they connect directly to their Exchange folders there is no "polling" of the server from the workstation or moving of messages from the server to a workstation location. The workstation is connecting directly to the server database, so all messages are shown on the workstation as soon as they are received on the server. Hope this helps!
